How can I go Solar in Mexico?

Wheter you live in Baja California or somewhere else in Mexico, you might wonder how solar energy works on this side of the border for new residents or Unites States expats living here in Mexico. In this article we´re going to walk you thru the process of getting an on grid pv system for saving up to 95% on your C.F.E. (energy company provider here in Mexico) utility bill.

Let´s say that you recently acquired a new house in Baja California, Mexico. Eventually, you realize that the previous owner went light crazy, besides you would like to use your A/C for the summer and also in winter because you´re located close from the beach. Naturally, you will be worry for the increasing utility bills. Why not getting a PV System to cover my energy consumption, right?

First of all, in this case, the utility bill will be under the last owner name, so you need to change it to your name so C.F.E. replace your meter for a special meter that counts the surplus energy coming from your solar panels. We invite you to read our article How do I change the name of the utility bill in Mexico to walk you thru this process.

There are several solar energy contractors in Baja, we recommend you to an expertise company, who has physical adress office and a bilingual consultant who can help you with the estimates and the C.F.E. paperwork after the PV System installation is done.

At this step you should have your Mexican Permanent Resident Card, your R.F.C. and the utility bill under your name because your going to need them for this formality.

Once you´ve decide for a solar energy provider and the solar panels are installed, the next step is to submit a request to C.F.E. to get your new solar meter . At this step you should have your Mexican Permanent Resident Card, your R.F.C. document (this is a mandatory document even if you don´t do taxes in Mexico. Check this video to know how to apply for it) and the utility bill under your name because your going to need them for this formality.

After your contractor submits this paperwork to C.F.E. you should get your meter replace between 5 to 7 days after, but don´t worry because your solar panels should be working right after they were installed, injecting energy to your house even if you haven´t get your meter replace by C.F.E. yet.
